When you need a bridge
When excavation crosses a footpath, entrance or other pedestrian route, people must be given safe passage. This is a requirement of temporary traffic management.
With a bridge, pedestrians can cross the trench and access to homes and businesses is kept throughout the work. We choose the bridge length based on the width of the trench.
Installing the bridge
The bridge must rest on firm ground on both sides of the trench, so it does not move or sink. The trench edges may collapse under the bridge's weight, so the bridge length is chosen to keep the supports far enough from the edge. Fences are usually placed by the bridge to guide pedestrians onto it. In the dark, warning lights improve visibility. The bridge location is shown on the traffic management plan.

Is a pedestrian bridge suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs?
Yes. The bridge is 1.5 metres wide, so a wheelchair and a pushchair can pass. The deck is anti-slip, and the handrails protect against falls. Make sure there is no high step at either end of the bridge.
Is a pedestrian bridge mandatory for excavation work?
If a trench crosses a pavement or an entrance, pedestrians must be given safe passage. Whether this is a bridge or a diversion depends on the site and the approved traffic management plan. If access to a home or building must be kept, a bridge is often the only solution.
