When you need traffic lights

Traffic lights are suitable where traffic has to be reduced to one lane for a longer time: road repairs, excavation, bridge works. The lights also work at night and at weekends.

On busier roads, the rules require traffic lights to show the remaining red time or detect vehicles with a sensor. The countdown timer on our lights meets this requirement.

Traffic lights and the traffic management plan

Temporary traffic lights are part of the traffic management and must be shown on the approved plan together with the warning signs. The plan sets the location of the lights and the length of the work area. The light cycle is set based on these, so vehicles coming from the opposite direction can clear the work area before the other side gets green. If needed, we prepare the plan and get it approved ourselves. We set up the lights on site and adjust them during the work if needed.

What we need for a quote

Tell us the work location, how long the lights must operate and how long the single-lane section is. It also helps to know the traffic volume and whether there are junctions or exits on the section. If an exit falls within the work area, an additional solution may be needed, such as a traffic controller. The price depends on the number of traffic light sets, the rental period and installation. We reply within 24 hours.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to use temporary traffic lights?

On a public road, traffic lights are part of temporary traffic management, so they must be shown on a plan approved by the road owner. On a national road, the Transport Administration (Transpordiamet) approves the plan. On a local road, the rural municipality or city does. We can prepare the plan and get the approval for you.

How long can I rent temporary traffic lights for?

We agree the rental period based on the work. The lights run on batteries at night and at weekends too, and we look after the batteries during the rental, so they also suit longer work. You will find the exact period and price in the quote.

Can temporary traffic lights be used at a junction?

Yes. A junction needs more traffic lights and a more detailed plan, because there are more traffic directions. Give us the junction location and the extent of the work, and we will put together a suitable solution. If needed, we also prepare the junction plan and get it approved.

Is it better to use traffic lights or a traffic controller?

Traffic lights suit situations where traffic must be reduced to one lane for a longer time. For short work, frequent changes or a very complex situation, a traffic controller may be better. Both are often used together. We can help you choose the right solution for your site.
